About The PAST FINDER Database and Maps

About the PAST FINDER and the maps
The goal of Paths of the Civil War is to use the full power of the Internet to help make the vast amount of historical data on the Civil War available to our visitors in dynamic ways.

The "Interactive Civil War Battle Map" is only the beginning. The main purpose of the Interactive Battle Map, along with the data listings, is to allow a visitor to search using a Regiment or Commander and provide a listing of many of the battles and campains that they participated in. Additionally, they can get a geographical overview, along with the color coding by year, and the symbol designating the scale of the battle. We hope our visitors, both experts and beginners alike, find this tool to be useful.

Projects in Development
We have several very exciting projects in development, which should be posted here in the coming months. Our focus will continue to be to find unique ways of bringing the historical community and information together.

We look forward to getting your comments and suggestions. Send email to info@PathsoftheCivilWar.com

Bibliography and Internet Sources

Battle Descriptions

The battle descriptions are from the incredible amount of data compiled by the Heritage Preservation Service, National Park Service. We are very fortunate to have a Goverment devoted to making vast amounts of information available to us all. We highly recommend visiting their website. Here are a few good starting points:
Overview of Organization
The Battle Database
Homepage - lots of info on American History

Other Government sources were used for data on Counties, Latitude and Longitude, Compilation of Civil War Regiments, among other detailed data tables needed to present the data on this website.

The Orders of Battle

A great deal of information on the Orders of Battles can be found on this website maintained by Randy Forbus:
Civil War Battles Pages

The Primary Source of detailed Civil War Order of Battle information is derived from:
"The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies Prepared Under the Direction of the Secretary of War, By Bvt. Lieut. Col. Robert N. Scott, Third U.S. Artillery and Published Pursuant OT Act of Congress Approved June 16, 1880. Washington: Government Printing Office 1880"

A very good conversion of this book the Internet can be found at the following website:
