Note -- No wartime photograph exists of Armistead. The pre-war image depicted in this portrait shows him in uniform, probably a captain in the 6th US Infantry, circa 1860.

Armistead's brigade - the 9th, 14th, 38th, 53rd, & 56th VA -- occupied the left of Pickett's line, overlapping and behind General Richard Garnett
